~ With special thanks to Laurie Shortland of Inglewood in Perth, Western Austraila for his briefing on OWNER.
If the elements of OWNER are strained, the general well-being of an average person would deteriorate and life can be threatened if one is chronically deprived for long years of proper rest, in lesser years if without proper exercise, around thirty days if without food, less then seven days if without water, a few minutes if without oxygen; this emphasizes the significant of OWNER in its orderly manner.
The essence for well-being is directly depended on the quality in the elements of OWNER. However, in deteriorating conditions caused by human activities our atmospheric environment and ecology systems are under increased strain, our drinking source for water from tap is deprived of its natural properties, and our nutrient sources are being contaminated and are becoming scarce as a result of high wastage at the backdrop of a surging world population. The quality for these three key elements are obviously not in good conditions on a global basis.
OxygenIt is as a matter of fact that we are consuming oxygen provided by our natural environment, the significant for good quality oxygen is much more important for health than good quality water or nutrient. The unnatural drawing of fossil fuels and the likes relentlessly from below the Earth's crust for energy consumption in worldwide practices have expelled the remnants of the fuels in gaseous forms and chronically add mass to the atmosphere in large volume; artificially outgassing. This would artificially alter the atmospheric composition, its effects on global climate change would have dire consequences to all ecosystems and would add intensity to extreme weather events. Although the atmospheres of Earth as a whole system needs to be cleansed and patched up badly, human activities are progressively adding greenhouse gases in volume and strain on an already laden situation with no effective resolution at all. On a global perspective, this situation is unsustainable in its progressive manner that increases perpetually with acceleration. One country on the face of this Earth with favorable geology situations allows it to produce renewable energy, of the 99.9% of Iceland's electricity that is currently generated from renewable sources, 81% is generated from hydroelectric power; virtually all the remainder from geothermal power. Geothermal sources are also used to heat 89% of the buildings in Iceland, with the remaining being heated with electricity. Excerpt from Wikipedia on renewable energy in Iceland. These scenarios somehow need to be extended on a global basis in the development for such technologies and find renewable energy sources to address the issues affecting a global atmosphere. Nutrient
The energy wastage from natural resources, water usage and release of greenhouse
gases are very high in the way food is generally produced and consumed, the
food supply is unsustainable for an exploding world population that is exponentially
rising. When the world population is
chronically
under extreme stressful circumstances, ferocious competitions for scarce resources
could eventually turn violence, and in chaotic situations peace would not be
sustainable.
Viewing vegetarianism
quantitatively from
a broad-based perspective
Is
vegetarianism right for us today?
If one sees the bigger picture from a broad-based perspective, the answer is absolutely affirmative. Below are some statistics:
-
To produce 1 pound of meat, it takes 2,400 gallons of water, whereas growing
1 pound of wheat, it only takes 25 gallons of water.
- 1.3 billion people could be fed with the grain and soybeans eaten by U.S.
livestock. The U.S. population is only 255,600,000.
-
64% of American agricultural land is used for livestock feed.
- 80% of U.S. corn and 95% of U.S. oats are eaten by livestock.
- 90% of protein, 99% of carbohydrate and 100% of dietary fiber is wasted by
cycling grain through animals.
- An acre of land can yield 250 pounds of beef vs. 40,000 pounds of potatoes
per year.
- More then 260,000 acres (1052.18 square kilometer) of US forest is cut every
year in order to grow crops to feed livestock.
- More
than 260 million acres of U.S. forest have been cleared to create cropland to
grow grain to feed farmed animals
-
It takes more than 11 times as much fossil fuel to make one calorie from animal
protein as it does to make one calorie from plant protein.
See an external link on "Meat Production Wastes Natural Resources" for further elaborations on some of the statistics.
In extensive studies it is now an established knowledge that meat diet is the number one cause for the human-induced climate change we are now facing, and with human population increased from ~2.5 billion in 1950 to ~6.9 billion in 2011, has a potential to reach ~8.3 billion by 2030, is the catalyst for a disaster of humanity relating to climate change. This was warned by accomplished scientists from all over the world, and Albert Einstein was one of such advocates who reasoned it is not an environmentally sustainable practice for meat diet in a modernized world.
“Nothing
will benefit human health and increase chances of survival
for life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.”
- Albert Einstein
Moreover, being vegetarian could be the healthiest choice and it helps the environment.
From a broad-based perspective, vegetarianism is absolutely a righteous way for us today.
See a WWF report on two planets needed by mid-2030s to sustain world’s current lifestyles, a report by the University of Chicago on their study that found out vegetarian diet is most energy-efficient, and a report on "THE ICE THAT MELTS TOO FAST" that elaborates on the causalities for the too quickly change of climate. “As
long as man continues to be the ruthless destroyer of lower living beings he
will never know
health or peace. For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other.”
- Pythagoras
| “A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.” - Albert Einstein, physicist, Nobel Prize 1921 |
“Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding.” - Albert Einstein
